One way to ensure cases like these do not happen in the future is to change the laws in America regarding organ donation. The current laws require one to give consent for their organs to be donated, however, there are many times, such as in this case, where consent cannot be given. Although not a perfect solution, one way to increase the number of organs available for transplant is to implement a system of presumed consent. In this system it is assumed that a person consents unless they say otherwise. It has been successful in increasing the number of donor organs in Spain, Belgium and France. While it is important to see each case individually and consider the ethics of each case, the current system fails too many people too often, so the best solution to this case as well as others is to change to a system of presumed consent.
